AK-47, aka Avtomat Kalashnikova, is the signature/main weapon in the game and the most popular assault rifle in the real world as well as in the world of CS:GO.
Players like this assault rifle for its killing power: it takes down an enemy with one headshot. However, like with any other weapon, AK has its weaknesses.
From the point of view of game economics, buying an AK is quite profitable. For only $2700 the player gets one of the most powerful and effective devices in the game. Besides, in terms of competition, there are Galil and SG553. The former is a cheap and slightly worse version of M4, and the latter, although it’s incredibly precise, has a completely different recoil pattern.
Thanks to comparatively low costs, T’s can get AK, armor, and a flash + a smoke grenade. This gentleman’s set is enough for a basic grande throw. Still, the player in this variation is very vulnerable to headshots. Even a standard USP-S can send a player respawning with one hit in the head.
A buy that’s worth it will cost no less than $4800. This will comprise:
- An AK
- Armor and a helmet
- Two flash grenades
- A smoke grenade
- A Molotov Cocktail.
For comparison’s sake, the defending side will have to spend $600 more considering AK will need to be swapped for M4 (without the defusal kit).
With the new economics, the defending side will need to go for a complete eco after getting defeated at the 1st round and by the beginning of the third round, everyone will have approximately $4500. That is by far enough for a basic buy.
AK’s standard damage is 36. With that, 77.5% of the impact goes through the armor. A headshot results in 140 damage, and a helmet hit means 108 damage. In terms of killing power AK can only compare with SG 553.
Besides from lethal headshots, AK makes quite an impact when it comes to body shots. Opponents without armor will be taken down with 3 hits, and with armor 4 shots will be lethal. Considering high basic damage, shots through obstacles with AK-47 is a fun and effective way to spend time. For some places, for example, shooting from the short position underground on Mirage, the damage incurred by AK and M4 can differ by several orders of magnitude.
Precision shooting is one of the weaknesses of AK-47. At a distance of 800 units (approximately 20 meters), every other shot will miss the head. Such distances seem huge in terms of exchanges of fire, but this isn’t so.
The center of Mirage, the space between the “main” and the “green” on Train, the length at Dust – all these spots put an AK at a disadvantage compared to M4A4. Unlike the T’s weapon, M4A4 at this distance will hit the head 3 times out of 4.
Besides average precision at length, AK makes us sad with its recoil. After the 4th shot, the barrel of the gun will start jumping, and after the 6th it starts jerking from side to side. Because of this long bursts from AK-47 are a complex and not a very effective idea.
Mobility and other factors
The player that runs with an AK develops a speed of 215 units. That is 15% less than running with a knife and 5% slower than running with M4A4. In order to be the most effective, the player has to run with a knife or a gun as much as possible.
As the description suggests, AK is not only a powerful but also a loud weapon. The shots can be heard from far away and that can be used to a player’s advantage. For example, earlier, the sound of gunshots was used to disguise the sound of jumping into the drop room. This trick can be used even now at the other matchmaking pool maps.
AK-47 is a signature weapon for CS:GO. Despite all the patches and fixes, a minimum of every third frag is acquired with this weapon. Learning how to deal with AK will make one’s life significantly easier and increase the rise through the ranks in matchmaking or on other platforms.
