Biggest Esports Fails Ever

Professional CS:GO players are considered the true elite among players. Their skills are tempered by thousands of hours of training and matches, their knowledge of the game is extensive, and their understanding of the opponent is at an exorbitant level. Usually, this is the case, and viewing the next CS:GO or the League of Legends tournament will allow you to see a team play and display skill unattainable anywhere else. But even the best esportsmans sometimes make epically stupid mistakes.

Summit1g vs. Molotov cocktail

The Molotov Cocktail from the moment of its appearance caused a flurry of criticism from the pros. Over time, cyber-sportsmen accepted and eventually fell in love with it, although to some it meant fatal setbacks.

At DreamHack Austin 2016, teams Splyce and Counter Logic Gaming played to determine who will depart from Group A. The first team had it rough – it had to play at the tournament with two substitutions. But they took a real hit at one of the last rounds of the first map, Train.

With a score of 15:11, Jaryd “summit1g” Lazar remained, as the saying goes,  “alone against the planted C4.” He had plenty of time and a smoke grenade. All that had to be done was to run up to the standard explosives installation point atTrain’s B spot and neutralize the bomb, but all was ruined by the flames from his own Molotov cocktail.

Neither the reserve of 40 points of health nor the knife in his hand made it possible for summit1g to run over his own flames. However, the worst was ahead. After an unexpected victory, Counter Logic Gaming cheered up and went for extra time, and there they beat Splyce. The second map of the match also went to the CLG’s piggy bank and summit1g together with Splyce dropped out of the tournament.

King of clutches did not win against all odds

Andreas “Xyp9x” Højsleth is deservedly considered the king of clutches. The Dane is cool, intelligent and reads opponents like open books. However, in his career, there is a shameful page. Namely, a failed clutch in a match against Natus Vincere at ELEAGUE Major: Atlanta 2017.

The score is 15:14 in favor of Na`Vi, Xyp9x is left alone against two, but he already has C4 planted and he has full control over point A of the Mirage map. He makes a good call, hiding under the roof of a wooden shed at the exit of the apartment. Seized and Edward do not check this point, so everything goes according to Andreas’ plan.

However, the perfect clutch was destroyed for a banal reason. Xyp9x could not hold on to rivals who lined up in a row. One of the easiest clutches in Andreas’s life ended in complete failure. However, Edward still fell at the hands of the Dane.

Astralis lost that map, but at the end of by virtue of two victories it turned out to be the winner. In the semifinals, the team managed to beat Fnatic, and to kick over Virtus.pro in the finals. So, Astralis has become the Major champions.

CaptainMo hates teammates

IEM Oakland 2016 was a real disappointment for TYLOO’s players. Despite several good matches, the team could not send a single game to its piggy bank. The reason for this failure was not only strong rivals, but also the actions of the players themselves, and more than anyone those of  Ke “captainMo” Liu.

In the match against G2, the Chinese TYLOO did not succeed at all. The French destroyed them on all fronts and in pretty much every round. It was necessary to cling to any opportunity and captainMo considered that killing a teammate was one of those possibilities!

After side-switching, the score was 13:2 in favor of G2. However, the first round in the second half went to the TYLOO piggy bank and they almost won the second. RPK, a G2 player, was left alone against two at point B of the Overpass mao. He was looking for one of the opponents, who was definitely nearby.

At that moment, captainMo came out onto the balcony. RPK spotted him and opened fire. In a stressful situation, Ke Liu incorrectly assessed the situation and instead of killing an opponent, accidentally shot a teammate, and after a second died himself. After this, TYLOO players could not recover and lost with a score of 3:16.

Magisk and insurmountable obstacles

Another player fell victim to pressure, this time a European. In the North vs. SK match, the third round of the group stage of ESL One: Cologne 2017, Emil “Magisk” Rafe made a ridiculous mistake which resulted in a loss.

With a score of 10:15, Magisk remained one against two and was very limited in time. He managed to successfully circumvent the Brazilian TACO and kill him. After that, Emil had the whole point B under control, and all he had to do was put C4 and pull off the clutch, but no.

Magisk did not manage to jump onto Cache‘s ledge on the first attempt. Because of this, he lost precious seconds and did not have time to install explosives. After the victory in this match SK reached the final and defeated Cloud9 there with a score of 3:0. North, on the contrary, has gone downhill from there. They lost the next two matches and took off from the tournament, assuming the 9-11 place (which is symbolic).

Fidget cajunB

While in previous cases players had to at least do something, which was to take clutches or jump onto ledges, René “cajunb” Borg simply had to sit still. Or throw the keyboard away, or just get up from the seat, or at least remove his hands from the table. But Rene didn’t cope with the task.

It’s the Natus Vincere vs. Astralis in the MLG Major Championship: Columbus. The score is 8:3 in favor of Na`Vi, the map is Dust 2 and the Danes are desperately trying to take a few more rounds in a defensive position.

A few seconds before the end of the round CajunB is in the pit at length, and Edward is on the outskirts of point A. The Natus Vincere player does not have enough time to install C4, in desperation he takes AWP and tries to catch the enemy at the exit from the pit.

And then a second before the end of the round a miracle happens. Rene, for whatever reason, runs out of the pit directly into the sight of the Ukrainian player and in accordance with all laws of logic and cause and effect dies, giving up a round in which there was no need to do anything to win. What a fail!
